Students in the Employability Skills Program at Allegan Area ESA Tech Center recently visited Brookside Farms in Otsego to explore real-world job opportunities. The trip provided a chance to experience authentic farm work and gain valuable insights into potential summer employment.
While at the farm, students enjoyed a variety of activities. They picked apples from the orchard, sampled freshly pressed cider, and tasted donuts, all while learning about the farm's application process. The staff at Brookside Farms shared valuable information about professionalism, job expectations, and the qualities they seek in employees.
Students actively engaged with the staff, asking insightful questions about the application process and learning firsthand about the skills and attitude necessary for success in the workforce. Topics included professionalism, effective communication, flexibility, and initiative—all essential skills emphasized in the Employability Skills Program.
The program itself is designed to meet the unique needs of students by offering learning experiences focused on building entry-level job skills, customer service, and strong relationships with co-workers. During the course, students focus on a range of practical skills such as maintaining a positive work attitude, following directions, and time management. The program aims to foster greater independence and prepare students for future employment in the community.
By the end of the course, each student will have developed a resume showcasing their multiple work experiences, skills gained, and professional references for future job opportunities.
The visit to Brookside Farms was a memorable and valuable step in the students’ journey toward professional independence. It not only provided them with practical experience but also allowed them to interact with professionals and understand the expectations of employers in a real environment.
