The Criminal Justice class at the Tech Center celebrated the end of an engaging first trimester this November. Students spent the term developing practical skills and exploring the foundations of law enforcement through a dynamic blend of classroom instruction and hands-on activities.
Over the trimester, students honed dispatching skills, learned proper procedures for vehicle stops—including experiencing the inside of a squad car—practiced handcuffing techniques, and explored the critical topics of Professional Standards, Ethics, and the branches of Public Safety. They also studied key aspects of Law and the Legal System and developed leadership and teamwork skills essential for success in the field.
The trimester concluded with an exciting visit to the Allegan County Courthouse, where students observed the workings of the family juvenile courtroom. During their visit, students were asked to identify the differences between this specialized courtroom and a typical courtroom setup, deepening their understanding of the unique aspects of family and juvenile law. They also learned about the adoption and probation processes, gaining an appreciation for how these critical systems support children and families. Adding to the excitement of the experience, students had the rare opportunity to sit in the judge’s chair, symbolizing the important responsibility and authority that judges hold. Engaging with courthouse staff further enriched the visit, providing valuable insights into the collaborative roles required to maintain an effective legal system.
The Criminal Justice program is designed to introduce and prepare students for a variety of careers in law enforcement and the broader criminal justice field. Students receive hands-on training in practical skills necessary for these roles and have the opportunity to earn certifications in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and CPR/First Aid. Additionally, successful participants may qualify for internships with local police and legal agencies, as well as earn college credits from partnering institutions.
By combining classroom instruction, field experiences, and certification opportunities, the program provides a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing careers in criminal justice. The trimester’s activities equipped students with both the technical skills and professional insights needed to take their next steps in this rewarding field.
