Last month, the Allegan Tech Center’s Employability Skills class had the opportunity to visit the Transition Center, marking a meaningful connection between the two programs. For many Employability Skills students, this visit provided a glimpse into their potential future as students of the Transition Center.
The Transition Center welcomed its guests with warm hospitality, showcasing its dedication to fostering inclusivity and collaboration. In preparation for the visit, Transition Center students learned about hosting friends and family, developing skills such as planning, organization, and communication. They baked cookies, made frosting, and prepared a cookie-decorating activity for their visitors, providing a hands-on and engaging way to connect with one another.
During the visit, Tech Center students received a guided tour of the Transition Center, met staff and current students, and learned about the program's core focus areas. The Transition Center emphasizes community-based instruction with a strong commitment to vocational skills and functional academics. This approach empowers students to safely navigate their communities and participate fully in activities like dining out, shopping, and attending community events.
A key aspect of the program is vocational skill development and exploration. The Transition Center works with students to prepare them for adult life by connecting them and their families with adult service agencies, ensuring a smooth transition to the adult community.
“This visit not only allowed our Tech Center students to learn about the Transition Center, but it also provided our Transition Center students with valuable experience in leadership and hosting,” shared Crystal Boddy, Apprentice Teacher. “Both groups gained insights that will help them grow in confidence and readiness for their next steps.”
By collaborating with the Tech Center, the Transition Center continues to strengthen its mission of fostering growth, independence, and lifelong learning. This partnership highlights the importance of building connections that prepare students for success in their personal and professional lives.
