For students at Hillside Learning Center, a day on the slopes at Bittersweet Ski Resort in Otsego was more than just an outdoor adventure—it was an opportunity to experience independence, joy, and the thrill of movement in a way many had never imagined.

Trips to the ski hill began in early January and will continue through the end of February. All classrooms will have the opportunity to participate in an adaptive skiing event, where dedicated volunteers use specialized equipment, including adapted skis and sleds, to guide students safely down the hill. As students glided across the snow, their smiles and laughter filled the crisp winter air, while staff members enthusiastically cheered them on.

For many students with physical and developmental challenges, traditional sports and recreation activities can present barriers. Adaptive skiing helps break those barriers, offering an exhilarating experience that builds confidence, promotes inclusion, and fosters a sense of accomplishment. Events like this highlight the importance of making outdoor activities accessible to all, ensuring that every student—regardless of ability—has the chance to participate, learn, and grow.

Teachers and staff recognize the profound impact these experiences have on their students. “Seeing our students out there, feeling the wind on their faces, laughing, and simply having fun—it’s a reminder of why inclusion matters,” Communications Coordinator, Carey Stolsonburg stated. “This day isn’t just about skiing; it was about showing them that adventure is for everyone.”

Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and the support of the community, this unforgettable day on the slopes was made possible. For the students, it was more than just skiing—it was freedom, excitement, and a chance to push past perceived limitations.
