ALLEGAN, MI – As part of a shared commitment to our students and community, Allegan Area Educational Service Agency (ESA), in partnership with Allegan Public Schools (APS), is excited to announce that West Ward Elementary School will continue to be a hub of student learning and growth in Allegan County.
As Allegan Public Schools prepares for the future by unifying its three elementary schools into one new, state-of-the-art elementary campus, Allegan Area ESA will be purchasing the West Ward Elementary building. This building will not sit empty and will remain a vibrant space filled with energy, purpose, and the sounds of students learning. The transfer of ownership will take place in the fall of 2026, aligning with the opening of Allegan Public School’s new elementary building.
West Ward Elementary will become the new home of Outlook Academy, Allegan Area ESA’s strict discipline academy, which provides students in grades 6–12 with a second chance to succeed through individualized, project-based learning, and strong mentorship. Outlook Academy students are committed to their education and future, and this move will give them the updated, inspiring learning environment they deserve.
“Our current Outlook building has served us well, but it's time for something better,” said William Brown, Superintendent of Allegan Area ESA. “Moving to West Ward gives our students a safe, welcoming space with more modern infrastructure—and the chance to continue thriving right in the heart of the Allegan community.”
“The sale of West Ward to Allegan Area ESA is more than a real estate transaction—it’s a testament to what can happen when public education partners work together with the future in mind,” said APS Superintendent James Antoine. “This agreement ensures West Ward remains a place where learning happens and where young people are supported.”
In alignment with Allegan Area ESA’s mission “to support and engage in partnership with our districts and communities to serve all families and create and drive educational innovations,” this collaboration allows both organizations to meet evolving student needs while maximizing community resources.
Importantly, the community will still be able to enjoy a cherished part of West Ward—the playground. It will remain open and accessible to the public outside of school hours, continuing its legacy as a place where families gather, play, and connect.
The building will not be abandoned—it will be reimagined. Allegan Area ESA will assume responsibility for upkeep and maintenance, ensuring the property remains a source of pride for the neighborhood and broader community.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to education, innovation, and the future of Allegan County’s youth.
